Totoro, Levi, and beautiful flowers – All part of the edible world of okonomiyaki art 【Videos】

OA 5

If you’ve never had the pleasure eating okonomiyaki, you’re missing out on one of Japan’s greatest culinary treats. Sometimes referred to as “Japanese pancakes” or “Japanese pizza,” Okonomiyaki is a circular crepe filled with cabbage and other vegetables along with meat, seafood, or whatever else you want to put in it.

The whole thing gets topped with a sweet, reddish brown sauce which not only tastes great, but can also serve as a great canvas on which to create awesome-looking and edible okonomiyaki art!

While okonomiyaki always comes slathered with sauce, individual diners may or may not choose to add mayonnaise as well. But while whether okonomiyaki’s taste is better with mayo or without is a matter of individual taste, adding the creamy condiment gives you a second color to work with, and allows you to do things like this.

Instagram Photo

Given okonomiyaki’s round shape, floral patterns seem to be a natural motif for oko art, as okonomiyaki art it also known.

▼ This one looks a bit like a gerbera.

If you want to work with more than one hue, mixing some food coloring in with the mayo will let you pull off okonomiyaki art like these scenes of dragonflies flittering about some leafy maple and gingko branches.

Japanese mayonnaise tends to be of a thicker consistency than Western varieties, and because of that, some okonomiyaki art aficionados recommend cutting it with vinegar, ideally five parts mayo to one part vinegar, to thin it out and make it easier to pull off more intricate line work. Alternatively, you can do what prolific oko artist and YouTube uploader Yumeishi TV does and lay down a layer of mayonnaise first, then draw what you want to in sauce.

OA 1

▼ Don’t let Sasha know Levi’s been transformed into okonomiyaki. She’s liable to chow down on him like a Titan devouring a helpless villager.

OA 2

▼ Jojo is looking so cool we can hardly stand it.

OA 3

▼ Yumeishi TV even wrote in the speech bubble text for this famous quote from Slam Dunk’s Coach Anzai!

OA 4

That last video also shows off the advanced okonomiyaki art technique of using a double layer of mayonnaise to add extra shading and depth to the picture. But as uncanny as the likeness is, you probably shouldn’t let Coach himself eat his okonomiyaki portrait, since being so heavy on the mayo means the calorie count is probably pretty high too, and it’s about time the manga mentor started watching his figure.

80s gamer 1

Video games nowadays are pretty complicated affairs, with hyper-realistic graphics, sweeping storylines and intricate controls. Sometimes, though, we still long for the time of simpler games, when there were only two buttons and the story was fairly non-existent.

A recent uptick in retro-style games really hammers home the idea that some of the older games were just plain…funner. OK, maybe the graphics could use a bit of an upgrade, but instead of updating the graphics, how about we “old-date” them instead? An artist embarked on a personal project that mixes 80’s video games with the ukiyo-e style and his results are so great, you want to see them up close in order to take in all the details.

This isn’t the first time classic video games have been stylized in a classic Japanese art form, but this is a case where you can’t have too much of a good thing. This time around we are bringing you the art of Singaporean illustrator William Chua and his series of artwork entitled “80’s Warrior’s Record”. Avid RocketNews24 readers might recognize the name of this artist as the one who created some really cool samurai cat illustrations. We were definitely fans of Chua back then, and these pieces only cement our adoration for his work.

“Hunting Season” – inspiration was Super Mario Bros. and the Capcom game Monster Hunter

“Monster Dogma” – Inspiration was Super Mario Bros. 2 and Dragon’s Dogma by Capcom

“Final of the Fantasy” – Inspired by one of the best-selling RPG video game series, Final Fantasy

“Death’s Choice” – Inspired by the characters from Golden Age

“Ice Terror” – Based on Ice Climber

“Cave Raider” – Inspired by Pac-Man

“Hero’s Lullaby” – Inspired by The Legend of Zelda, with Link saving Princess Zelda from Ganon

“The Blue Warrior” – Inspired by Mega Man

“Rescue Dawn” – Inspired by Contra

“Big Trouble in Little Japan” – Inspired by Donkey Kong

Even though this series of illustrations was completed between 2009 and 2013, it’s still a very impressive set of artwork. We can’t wait to see what new pieces Chua has in store for us in the future. You can follow along with us on his Facebook page and his personal website. His ukiyo-e take on modern themes and characters is a great throwback to one of Japan’s most unique and famous styles of art, plus they’re pretty darn cool to look at. If you see anything you’d like to have hanging in your home, you can buy prints of much of his work from his website.

marvel gundam 3

When Japan got its hands on a Marvel property back in the 1970s, it added something that is now recognized as very Japanese: giant robots, which Japanese Supaidaman used to battle his foes like a web-slinging Gundam pilot (even though the original Mobile Suit Gundam wouldn’t make its debut until two years later).

Jump to today, and both Marvel and Gundam are going strong in their respective home countries. However, if Marvel ever wants to increase its market share in Japan, maybe they should be working to create Gundam robots versions of their most famous characters. If you’re having a hard time imagining that crossover, we’ve found some fan art that will have you writing letters to both companies to make this happen.

On the Facebook page DC/Marvel-Comics/Movies, fans are encouraged to share creations, gossip and chat about all things comic book and movie-related. The moderators themselves will share amazing things they have found too and we have to admit that a Gundam/Marvel crossover is pretty intriguing. The original art was done by Aburaya Tonbi on pixiv and this is certainly a mashup that we are huge fans of.

▼ Spider-Man keeps his slim figure for increased mobility and speed.

▼ Cap still looks extremely patriotic and we can only imagine what kind of damage his shield does now.

▼ We imagine Tony Stark doesn’t care about how much this upgrade cost, since he’s a billionaire.

▼ Gerbera Black Widow is ready to put the sting on other robots.

▼ Gelgoog Marine Hawkeye looks like he is still bringing a bow to a fight with super-advanced technology.

▼ Mighty Thor becomes even mightier with the edition of tons and tons of metal.

▼ Loki always seems a little top-heavy, but he’s a god.

▼ This huge green machine is still smashing all those who get in his way.

▼ The “twins” live again!

▼Eye patch? Check.

▼ Ant Man and Wasp are a deadly and dynamic mini-Gundam duo.

▼ And we thought Professor X was dangerous with just his telepathy…

▼ Magneto looks a bit like Onslaught here, but don’t tell him we said that.

▼ Emma Frost is still wearing a revealing costume in robot form.

▼ Wolverine keeps his claws and iconic colors, but we have to wonder if he still has super healing

▼ Like Wolverine, this Gundam is ready for close quarters combat

▼ Sorry, Cyclops, even now no one likes you…

▼ In a non-mutant world, Juggernaut probably would be a sumo wrestler.

https://www.facebook.com/765348396880942/photos/pcb.891408400941607/891408237608290/?type=1&theater

▼ The Silver Samurai is already wearing armor, so this isn’t much of a stretch.

▼ “Master Strange,” bringing an element of magic to a futuristic world

▼ Deadpool’s Kapool “DeadKapool” already knows that you love him.

▼ Brother and sister reunited in robot form.

▼ Kinda perfect, since Goufs already use that similar whip-like weapon.

▼ Taskmaster isn’t a super popular character, but he fits pretty well with the Gyan.

▼ Not sure how well Ghost Rider’s flaming head will burn in outer space…

▼ Acguy Racoon & Catol “I am” Groot

▼ Gundam “Punisher” is ready to make up for all the mistakes he made in life

Whether you’re an Avengers fan, an X-men fan, or a fan of any of Marvel’s other iconic comic book characters, there’s something for everyone. Just like the multitude of robots in Mobile Suit Gundam, they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. You can find more of Aburaya Tonbi’s work on his pixiv page, so be sure to check it out if you like this fan art.

The awesome Nintendo and anime-inspired stairway art of Japanese high schools 【Photos】

KA 0

Growing up in suburban southern California, my elementary, junior high, and high schools were all single-story structures. As such, my classmates and I went through our K-12 education without knowing the excitement of the romantic rendezvous and bare-knuckle showdowns that so often occur in the stairways of schools in TV shows, movies, and other works of fiction.

Still, we made do, as the student body just had to find alternate locations in which to swap spit or punches. One thing we definitely missed out on, though, was the opportunity to create awesome stairway art, like these students in Japan who decorated their school steps with the cast of Super Mario Bros., Love Live!, and Attack on Titan.

Around this time of year it’s customary for schools in Japan to have a culture festival, or “bunkasai” as they’re called in Japanese. The culture festival is sort of like an open house, except that it’s more of a showcase of the students’ creativity than what they’ve necissarily been studying in their classes.

In recent years, it’s become popular for students to decorate their home room classroom with chalkboard art during the event, which usually stretches over the two days of a weekend. But while chalkboard art can be truly amazing, only those visitors who stop by your specific room get to enjoy it.

On the other hand, if you decorate the steps of the stairway, anyone walking up or past it can see your artistic stylings.

Unlike their American counterparts, educational institutes in Japan don’t have a school-wide mascot, which means that stairway artists aren’t locked into painting a Puma, Eagle, or Saint.

KA 1

But while some opted for murals like the ones shown above, this is Japan we’re talking about, which means no shortage of amateur artists who’re inspired by the worlds of anime and video games.

▼ This looks well-done enough to meet Nintendo’s quality standards.

Ironically, this Splatoon artwork (featuring a cameo by the always-welcome Kirby) required much more precise paint placement than the popular team-based shooter from Nintendo does.

From hit video games to hit anime, apparently this school’s faculty has no problems with Love Live!, unlike some of their stricter colleagues.

KA 2

▼ Like Love Live!, both Haikyu!! and Kuroko’s Basketball are focused on the dreams and ambitions of high school students, making them suitable choices for a culture festival.

KA 3

On the other hand, Tokyo Ghoul’s half-monster Ken, who hungers for human flesh, is a considerably less wholesome choice that this school’s teachers nevertheless let slide.

Speaking of man-eaters, the angled perspective on this Attack on Titan scene really helps give a sense of how huge the giant is, plus how creepy his teeth are.

But while some of the motifs might have been unsettling, there’s no denying that there’s plenty of artistic talent and passion on display here. We’re sure that upon seeing these creations, plenty of parents told their kids how proud they were of them.

▼ And perhaps some of the parents, who haven’t really kept up on Mario developments since they were in school themselves, asked their children just when the series introduced a blue shell.

When you find something you really like, it’s sometimes hard to express how much it’s influencing your life. To show off how much they love something, some fans try cosplay or rampant consumerism. Others write songs or fan fiction to tell the world the extent of their affection.

But for others, it’s as simple as drawing a picture that perfectly captures all their feelings on the paper. One such artist has put her heart and soul into some fan art that shows the kind of devotion Studio Ghibli inspires in its fans.

Going by the name GhibliLover92 on DeviantArt, this artist has been on fire lately, sharing tons of drawings and artwork that pays tribute to one of her favorite animation studios, Studio Ghibli. Each of her drawings is vibrant, colorful, and captures the joy and energetic feeling we all get when watching the anime production house’s movies.

Sometimes, we can feel a little put off when someone takes our childhood memories and adds an adult twist to them. We want to preserve our innocence by keeping things exactly as they were. However, when the work is this good, you just have to appreciate the final product. Besides, Disney was made for adults too, right?

We might have walked down this road before, but the artist for this round of princess pin-ups is Russian born Andrew Tarusov who has built his artistic repertoire after settling down in Los Angeles years ago. His favorite style is pin-up and classic comic book art and says his inspiration all comes from his wife. This means, instead of a little bit of Photoshop magic, Andrew has re-imagined and re-drawn the Disney princesses completely. So what do our Disney girls look like with his creative touch?

Stop-motion Attack on Titan/Godzilla crossover is disturbingly awesome 【Video】

Attack on Titan’s adaptations to other forms of media have been sort of hit-and-miss. Sure, the animated TV series that followed up on the success of the original manga is the anime industry’s biggest hit in decades, but kind words for the two live-action movies have been few and far between.

Still, the upcoming video game version looks pretty cool, and as further proof that the series can still be cool in new formats is this awesome fan-produced stop-motion video that’s a crossover between Attack on Titan and Godzilla.

Jordan Tseng’s expertise may be with stop-motion models and CG, but the Taiwanese animator also apparently has a love for hand-drawn art and rubber suit practical effects. His newest project is a stop-motion retelling of Attack on Titan.

The first episode, “Shocked,” even seems to be trying to correct a problem that many fans have with the original show by jettisoning series protagonist Eren and instead putting the spotlight on cool-as-ice warrior Mikasa.

ST 1

Much like the canonical Attack on Titan, Tseng’s version takes place in a city with medieval architecture and a surrounding wall that gets breached by naked and creepy colossi that hunger for flesh.

▼ None of the other Attack on Titan regulars show up, but Steins;Gate’s Kurisu makes a cameo.

ST 2

ST 33

But while Mikasa is fine standing around while one resident gets eaten, she’ll be damned if she’s going to let two of her neighbors die, so she springs into action, whipping out her blades and zipping across the skyline with her 3-D maneuver gear.

ST 4

As fans of the original Attack on Titan can already predict, the monsters don’t stand a chance, because this is Mikasa we’re talking about here. She makes short work of her opponents, and despite their being made out of wood, there’s quite a lot of viscera produced in the Titan takedown.

ST 5

ST 6

ST 7

But just when it looks like Mikasa has saved the day, she hears another thunderous footstep. Could it be another Titan?

ST 8

Nope, it’s Godzilla!

ST 9

Mercilessly, the video ends just seconds later, although Tseng is promising four more episodes in the series. While waiting for the second, you can pass the time by checking out some of his other projects, like these cool Fate/Stay Night and Dragonball fights.

But how will Mikasa respond to her city’s newest threat? Will she conclude that living to fight another day is the best choice, and look for a stop-motion escape vehicle? Or will the experienced giant-killer stand her ground and fight?

We can’t wait to find out.

scary 4

There are plenty of horror movie villains that scare us so bad we can’t sleep at night. These include the classics like Freddy Kruger, Jason, and Chucky as well as some newer terrors like Pennywise, Sadako, and Ghostface. Well, isn’t it about time to expand the roster of baddies that keep you up at night? They might not be household screamfest names yet, but what about Freeza, Cell and Evil Majin Buu?

Yes…the Dragon Ball Z villains. We are not pulling your leg (nor ripping it off painfully), but one artist has rendered these two-dimensional anime characters into truly terrifying creatures of the night. So, hide your kids and hide your wives, because it’s about to get super scary.

Edgar Gómez obviously has a talent, and it’s his ability to give us the heebie jeebies. Though he has many gorgeously crafted works, we always have a special place in our hearts for art that features iconic Akira Toriyama characters. You will never want to turn your back on this version of Freeza, the Emperor of the Universe. Would you be able to go against the demands of this terrifying superior being? Probably not, especially if he was looking at your with those red eyes.

▼ It’s the smile before something really bad is about to happen.

▼ Don’t look into his eyes!

The next villain is Cell in his final form. Considering how he is bright green and purple in the anime version, we shouldn’t be all that scared of him. How scary can green and purple be, right? Right?!?

▼ Wrong! He will stop your heart with a twitch of his purple eyes and that will be the end.

And finally, the crème de la crème of what it means to terrify someone out of watching Dragon Ball Z ever again. We can’t get this monster out of our heads!

▼ Edgar just had to go with super pointy teeth…Majin boohoo, go away!

You probably won’t ever look at Dragon Ball Z characters in the same way. If you are brave enough to like what you see, Edgar has other equally artistic, but less disturbing artwork on his Facebook page.

Good luck sleeping tonight!

These fan-drawn fused Pokémon are so cool we wish they were really in the game

fusion 1

When Pokémon graced our tiny Game Boy screens back in 1996 (or, depending on where you’re from,  1998 or 1999), we all thought that nothing could be better than these beautifully crafted 151 animal-like Pocket Monsters. But then a second generation of games came out and suddenly we were graced with 100 new Pokémon who pledged their loyalty and undying love to us, their trainers. Now in 2015, there are 721 different Poké-friends to collect and train and we couldn’t be happier with them…unless we could take two of our favorites and fuse them together, that is!

The concept may have been done before, but each artist brings their own personal fliar and the results are always fascinating. What makes the following combinations unique is that sometimes there are not two but three Pokémon fused together!

The theory behind what makes up a good fusion is pretty simple, but finding a combination that still looks cute or brings out all the ferocity of the original Pokémon can be tricky. For example, if you’re fusing Beedrill and Pigeot, do you keep the sharp pointy weapons of the bee Pokémon or emphasize the bird-shape of the flying Pokémon?

Canadian-based artist Seoxys certainly has a knack for picking all the right features to highlight from each Pokémon, and we hope someone in the Nintendo offices is taking a look at her work for inspiration for a new generation of Pokémon.

▼ We could wake up to this cutie every day.

▼ Drink milk if you want to keep your fusion powers strong.

▼ Two water type Pokémon seem like a natural fit for a fusion.

▼ A little blue, a little white, a whole lot of cute

▼ A spooky nine-tails is everything we never knew we wanted.

▼ This one looks like the Spirit of the Forest from Princess Mononoke.

▼ Snorlax’s much more energetic cousin

▼ Don’t let that Grumpy Pokémon face fool you.

▼ What do you get when you fuse a cat, a bird, and a dragon?

▼ X + Y obviously equals Z, and this would be a perfect Legendary Pokémon for the game.

▼ So many Legendary Pokémon, so darn cool!

▼ The T-Rex of our Pokémon dreams!

▼ This trio of Legendary birds make a fantastic single Pokémon.

If you are a Pokémon fan, you can’t help but wish that fusions like these will be a feature in the next Pokémon game, maybe even the mobile version they are currently working on. For now, we will just have to settle for these epic concept illustrations from Seoxys. If you like what you see, take a look at her Facebook page for more of her work — Gotta look at ’em all!

October 31 is quickly approaching and for those of us who don’t have our costumes or decorations ready yet, you’d best hurry. Sure there are plenty of last-minute costumes and decorations you can scrounge up, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t compare to something meticulously planned out.

A carved pumpkin is one decoration you can complete in a few hours, but if you really want to lure the trick-or-treaters, you have to go the extra mile. Check out this amazing pumpkin that shows us the day in the life of lovable Luigi and his haunted mansion. It would look awesome on your front porch, and even more so with a special little addition.

All it takes to make a Jack-o’-lantern is a couple of triangles and some circles, but people have been very creative in the past few years utilizing the thick walls of the pumpkin to carve out an image that truly glows thanks to the candle in the middle. DeviantArtist Ceemee has been posting a number of pumpkins that often feature a gaming theme, but one of her past creations has been getting a lot of publicity recently.

Ceemdee used stencils, X-acto blades, and some serious skills when carving on the pumpkin. Just look at how intricate her slices are, as well as the control she must need to get the different depths.

Perhaps the coolest part, though, is how she combines a Boo carving with the Luigi. Shining behind Luigi thanks to a LED, the accompanying effect sets this pumpkin far and above the rest.

Just as languages around the world are each unique yet beautiful, art has also developed its own flavor depending on where you are from. When comparing Western and Asian animation, there is a distinct style difference when it comes to the shape of faces, size of facial features, and the overall aesthetic. Both styles are very appealing, but when push comes to shove, all of us probably have a preference between the two.

Art is also a conversation though, and it can be transposed between two different worlds, such as Western art with an Asian flair or vice versa. One artist’s rendition of Final Fantasy characters drawn with a Western touch is making us super-excited because they look like they are ready for their Disney close-ups.

The talented artist behind these mash-ups is David Adhinarya Lojaya, a visual development artist from Indonesia. He’s studied animation at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and has had his work featured in games, books and film. Lojaya’s artistic style shows characteristics of Western cartoon art and in his free time he likes to render the casts of popular Japanese video games like Kingdom Hearts, Street Fighter and Final Fantasy in his own way.

2-D heroines get a boost from 3-D perspective and an extremely talented fan.

The Puella Magi Madoka Magica television series and subsequent pair of compilation movies were met with near-universal praise, but opinions have been more sharply divided regarding the third theatrical feature, Rebellion. Detractors say that Rebellion’s central conflict, based on the relationship between protagonist Madoka and fellow magical girl Homura, felt forced, and that they would have been more satisfied had the franchise come to a conclusion after the events depicted in the TV series and first two movies.

But we think even fans who say they’ve seen enough of Madoka and Homura will make an exception for this amazing piece of artwork by Japanese Twitter user @mina_naya.

From this angle, it might only look mildly impressive, although even here the coloring is especially nice. But if you look hard enough, you can see that pink-haired Madoka is actually drawn on a separate piece of paper that’s attached to the lined base sheet. Fold that in half, and you’ll see what makes the illustration truly special.

Helping to sell the 3-D effect are the “shadow” beneath Madoka, which is actually sketched onto the paper. There’s also the eraser in front of Homura, which was also drawn by @mina_naya, and which many online commenters declared even more realistic looking than the two anime characters who look to be leaping right off the page. Oddly enough, @mina_naya says he hardly put any effort at all into sketching the photo-realistic eraser, leading us to think that even if he lacks the witch-slaying abilities of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica heroines, he has some magical art skills.

If anime girls suddenly started appearing in reality, you’d probably expect them to first show up in Japan, right? But as this collection of fan art photo edits proves, they look equally at home in Russia, Portugal, and other parts of Europe.

Earlier this year, we took a look at a series of photos from significant moments in late 19th and early 20th century history with anime characters posing for the camera. However, it now look as though this phenomenon has continued into the modern era.

Users of imageboard website 4chan recently started a thread asking contributors to “Post cute anime girls in places they are not usually seen.” Real-world Russia definitely qualifies, although we’re not quite sure why it’s become the go-to location for the fan art series.

RA 12

RA 2

RA 13

Maybe it has something to do with the country’s abundance of austere architecture, which looks like the sort of simple designs that could be easily produced for animation and helps keep the hand-drawn characters from looking out-of-place.

RA 16

This snowy scene also works well, since there aren’t any real people out braving the cold who would contrast jarringly with this Love Live! idol.

▼ Wait, you mean Maki Nishikino actually does go for walks in the real world? Maybe this kid was telling the truth after all!

RA 7

RA 4

RA 8

Some of the artists put impressive amounts of effort into adding environmental details, like the character’s shadows and reflections.

RA 6

RA 15

RA 20

The thread also contains no small number of anime girls lying or sitting on beds.

RA 19

RA 9

RA 18

But like with the deserted cityscapes, it seems like most of these bedtop backdrops were chosen because they make for a compact, contained environment to work with, and not just to be suggestive.

▼ With some exceptions — this is an exercise in otaku fantasy, after all.

Traditional Chinese art mixes with Star Wars characters to celebrate the New Year

star wars 4

Both the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire would agree that these renditions of our favorite Star Wars characters are the perfect way to welcome 2016.

The epic Star Wars universe is filled with different elements that people can connect with in their everyday lives. Whether it’s the characters, the science-fiction setting, or the never-ending battle of good versus evil, there is something about it that resonates with people. Hong Kong artist Tik Ka, who specializes in the combination of traditional Chinese culture with adorable baby faces, took the characters Star Wars fans love and infused them with Chinese traditions to create something new but still instantly recognizable.

▼ Darth Maul looks just like an ancient demon practicing the ways of the dark side of the Force. The B1 battle droid, though, is just adorable.

▼ It’s the simple details that make this so perfect, like giving the Chinese guardian dog two different colored eyes to simulate Darth Vader’s breastplate.

▼ These Stormtroopers look more like they want to find enlightenment than serve the Empire.

▼ C-3P0 & R2-D2 look just as lost as when they first arrive on Tatooine.

▼ We would definitely take this pair if we had to infiltrate the Death Star and rescue Princess Leia.

▼ Like an ancient Chinese sage, Obi-Wan looks extremely wise and at one with everything around him.

▼ Luke Skywalker looks impressive decorated with the rebel insignia and designs from ancient China.

▼ Yoda proves you’re never too old to learn as he reads a scroll with the words “the Force” in Chinese.

▼ Boba Fett following the “no disintegrations” order reluctantly.

▼ This is now the only way we want to see slave Leia and Jabba the Hutt. Somehow Jabba is adorable.

▼ A glimpse of what is to come with Rey and BB-8.

Every single piece of art is paired with a different Chinese New Year’s greeting that is wishing for the good fortune of family, continued success in business, or hopes for others to stay safe and healthy. Tik Ka would love to print these pieces as posters or to put them onto the traditional red pockets or red envelopes that people give to each other at Chinese New Year’s.

▼ “I find your lack of Lord Vader disturbing.”

We would love to see more characters completed in this style, especially if the new movie turns out to be a hit. If you like Tik Ka’s work, you can find more of his beautiful art on his Facebook page.  Let him know that the RocketForce led you there.

Evangelion Unit-01 looks perfect reimagined as a knight in medieval Europe

Whether the near future or the distant past, Evangelion Units look pretty fearsome in whatever era they appear.

Neon Genesis Evangelion was a smash hit following its release in the 1990s and continues to influence anime today. There have been new movies, bullet trains and the perpetually rumored live-action Hollywood adaptation, but in every case, the setting has been in the near future. That makes sense. After all, we’re nowhere close to being able to produce gigantic bio-“machines” that protect us from equally enormous Angel foes.

Albert Urmanov, a fan artist, though, transported the series back to medieval times and reimagined an Evangelion as a European Knight.

▼ Move over the Mountain and the Hound, there’s a new knight in town.

eva 1

The moss-covered Unit-01 looks valorous with plated armor that is decorated with the holy symbol of the cross. Asuka stands on a walkway below, looking up at the knight in purple armor. We can’t help but wonder, though, if it’s the Evangelion or the pilot that she’s longing for.

Urmanov was able to perfectly capture the aesthetics of Evangelion but still make it feel like the entire series could easily have been set in a medieval world. We hope this isn’t the only time-shifted inspired piece Albert does, because we’d love to see the rest of the residents of Tokyo-3 inhabiting this setting as well.

sailormooncrossover

One artist’s crossover artwork featuring the Sailor Scouts in Saint Seika-style costumes is currently going viral—and it’s easy to see why!

For anime and manga fans who grew up in the 90s, Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon were two of the biggest series to appear on Western TV sets.

Centering on the battles of five magical, celestial warriors, and combining anime-style storytelling with Greek and Roman mythology, on the surface there were numerous similarities between the two, not to mention the fact that the anime adaptations of both series were handled by Toei Animation.

Because of this, it’s no surprise that many fans considered the series ideal for pairing off the main characters of each to make the perfect crossover, but it wasn’t until recently that one Brazilian artist on DeviantArt decided to take the concept to a new level by creating Saint Seiya-inspired costumes for each of the inner Sailor Scouts.

▼ Sailor Mercury x Cynus Hyoga

▼ Sailor Mars x Phoenix Ikki

▼ Sailor Jupiter x Dragon Shiryu

Each beautifully drawn piece was created by Alan Garcia, and it’s no surprise that they went viral soon after being uploaded. They were even featured on the Brazilian online anime mash-up battle site Anime All-Stars Game, along with multiple other anime and Sailor Moon crossovers portraits by Garcia that we encourage you to check out here.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a real cross-over without showing the Saint Seiya characters in sailor suits, and hey, we’re not ones to leave you all hanging.

Talented Canada-based artist Sakimi-chan wows us again, this time with sizzling images of Dragon Ball couples!

We’ve brought to you examples of Sakimi-chan’s brilliant work before, including gender-bent Disney and Ghibli characters, realistically portrayed Naruto characters and even Looney Tunes animal characters in human form. (Yes, we never thought we’d be saying this, but she makes Bugs Bunny look HOT!)

Now, she’s given us some brilliant work depicting one of our favorite subjects, Dragon Ball, and with a romantic, sexy twist, too!

With all the fighting to save the universe that goes on, romance may sometimes seem secondary in the Dragon Ball world, but Sakimi-chan  does an excellent job of reminding us that there are three established couples among the main characters in the series.

▼ Of course, we have to have a picture of our hero Goku with his wife Chichi. Let’s just say, Goku’s muscular arms look amazing, and we love Chichi’s absolutely kissable lips!

▼ Vegeta and Bulma, while an unexpected match at first, are now a long-standing couple that has ended up being very well-received by fans. The Saiyan prince and the sexy and brilliant scientist/heiress certainly don’t make for a boring couple!

▼ And last but not least, here’s Krillin and Android 18. They usually make a very cute couple, but in this case, both of them look much more sexy than cute!

So, what did you think of the Dragon Ball characters illustrated in a realistic and sexy way? Granted, they look quite different from what we’re used to seeing, but we think the illustrations should be a lot of fun for even casual fans of the series. While all the action and fighting is great, it’s always nice to see Goku and his friends doing something other than blasting out enemies. Besides, they all look absolutely stunning in the pictures, and eye-candy like this always welcome in our opinion!

Do you have a favorite Dragon Ball couple?

We’ve seen loads of Sailor Moon fan artwork over the years, but these pieces by Chinese artist Sunmomo are some of the most ethereal-looking by far.

Some of us here at RocketNews24 are huge fans of the Sailor Moon series, and every now and then, we populate our site with some amazing Sailor Moon fan art we come across online. Over the years we’ve seen quite a variety of artwork, from lingerie-clad Sailor Senshi to series crossovers to Sailor Moon characters drawn in a completely different style, but these digital paintings created by Beijing-based graphic artist Sunmomo simply took our breath away.

Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke goes Art Nouveau in amazing fan art treatment

mononokefeature

Studio Ghibli fan and Part-time artist Hannah Alexander created this dazzling Art Nouveau version of Princess Mononoke from Hayao Miyazaki’s classic animated film.

Even if you’ve never heard of artist Alphonso Mucha, you’ve almost certainly seen his distinctive work.

Mucha was a star of the Art Nouveau era, responsible for many of the advertising posters and other decorative art works that defined the period. More than a handful of his works live on as prime examples of the art style of the very early 1900s, with their distinctive curves that render the works both wispy and angular at once, almost like stained glass.

It’s no surprise that Mucha’s unique style is studied in fine art schools the world over and continues to have a huge impact on modern artistic works, including fan art… such as this awesome Art Nouveau-ified Princess Mononoke from fan artist Hannah Alexander!

mononoke1

Alexander’s Mucha-inspired art was already pretty well-known on the DeviantArt-y-er corners of the Internet, thanks to a series she did of Mucha-style Disney princesses a while back. But it looks like the talented artist, who has a passion, it seems, for Ghibli films, decided to expand the series to cover the titular character from Miyazaki’s renowned animated outing.

One of Mucha’s originals, for comparison

mucha1

Alexander’s work does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Mucha’s art without looking or feeling like a direct ripoff. Interestingly, the Art Nouveau Princess Mononoke brings things full circle, in a way, as, apparently, the original Art Nouveau style was itself heavily inspired by Japanese woodblock painting!

According to Ms. Alexander’s Facebook page, the Princess Mononoke work is available for order as a print over on her Etsy page.
